The Northville Community is comprised of the City of Northville and Northville Township. Together they provide their residents with the benefits of small town living and pretty rural countryside. The City of Northville with little undeveloped land has maintained a stable population of just over 6,400, while Northville Township has increased by one-third to over 21,000 residents since 1980. During this same period the housing values in both areas have almost doubled and are the highest in western Wayne County.
The City of Northville has retained its Victorian charm with many historic homes, old-fashioned street lamps and benches, and renovated landmarks including the four-sided town clock (pictured above), specialty shops and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
Northville has done a remarkable job of preserving its landmarks. Mill Race Historical Village is just a short walk from downtown. Here, on eleven acres of land donated by the Ford Motor Company in 1972, the Northville Historical Society has gathered historic buildings from the area and restored them into a living museum. Other popular nearby landmarks are the Northville water wheel and duck pond on the grounds of the old Ford valve plant and the Northville well that still supplies refreshing, cold well water to passers-by.
Although the scenic hills of Northville Township have attracted considerable residential development, the township has retained its natural beauty and rural character. There are several pretty lakes including Silver Springs Lake, the only natural lake in all of Wayne County. Here also is the beginning - or end - of Wayne County's Edward Hines park which runs along the Rouge River.
The Northville community is dedicated to being a charming, attractive place to live and achieves this goal by maintaining its small town heritage and surrounding scenic wealth.
Community Highlights:
The Northville community is well situated for those who want to "get away from it all" but want the convenience of being relatively close to downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor, and the airport.
Northville is a growing community; the population has increased nearly 45% from 1980 to 1996 and is expected to continue growing into the next century. Housing density is significantly below the Metro Detroit average. There is still substantial room for additional development.
Homes in the community are relatively new. Over 75% of the homes in the township have been built since 1970; almost one-half since 1980.
In spite of Northville's relative affluence, most students attend the Northville Public Schools rather than private schools - a tribute to the quality of its public school system. Almost all students go on to 2 or 4 year colleges.
The recreation department of Northville sponsors little league baseball, softball, hockey, soccer and football for all age groups.
For year round recreation, Northville offers the following:
3 Baseball diamonds
Private swim club
Maybury Urban State Park - 920 acres
in northwestern section of the township
Cass Benton and Hines Parks
One private and three public golf courses
Several lakes
